Burning Birds nominated for coved Swedish award

The Davena Vihagun (aka Burning Birds) film, written and directed by Sanjeewa Pushpakumara has been nominated for the prestigious The Ingmar Bergman Award at 40th Göteborg International Film Festival ( Gutenberg) in Sweden.

The film will be screened during the 'Ingamar Bergman Competition'.

This is said to be the first Sri Lankan film to be nominated for the coveted Ingmar Bergman Award.

The Göteborg International Film Festival is the biggest film festival in Scandinavian region with this year's edition being held from January 26th to 6th February.

The first Nordic premiere of Davena Vihagun (Burning Birds) will be on 1st February 2017.

Meanwhile, the film has also been invited by the 46th International Film Festival Rotterdam to its Bright Future section. The film festival will be held from 25th January to 5th February 2017. The European premier of the Burning Birds  will be on 28th January at the 46th International Film Festival Rotterdam. Sanjeewa’s debut film Flying Fish also was world premiered in Tiger Competition of 40th International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2011.

Burning Birds world premiered at 21st Busan International Film Festival in South Korea last October, where the film nominated for the Best Film of the festival. Though film did not win the award could won many hearts of critics and audience. Last November Davena Vihagun ( Burning Birds) won the Special Jury Prize (the second prize) of 17th Tokyo FILMeX International Film Festival in Japan.

Burning Birds is Sanjeewa’s second film followed by controversial Flying Fish ( Igillena Maluwo). The film is a co-production between Sri Lanka, France, The Netherlands and Doha Qatar. Burning Birds film project selected to 2012- 2013, 25th Cinéfondation Residence Programe of Cannes Film Festival in Paris . Followed by the script was selected to The Jerusalem International Film Lab in 2014 for advanced script development. During seven month period Sanjeewa developed the script at the Jerusalem International Film Lab in Israel. At the lab Sanjeewa worked with one of world’s renowned script advisers Mr. Jacques Akchoti (France).

Burning Birds is produced by Antonin Dedet & Dominique Welinski (France) on behalf of Neon Production and Sanjeewa Pushpakumara on behalf of Sapushpa Expressions ( Sri Lanka).

The International sales agent of Burning Birds is Film Republic in London.

Mahendra Perera , Samanalee Fonseka, Anoma Janadari, Chandani Senevirathne, L‍eonie Kotalawala, Pubudu Chathuranga, Priyanka Samaraweera,Dasun Pathirana, Tissa Bandaranayaka, Shyam Fernando, Dharshan Dharmaraj, Sanjeewa Dissanayake and Dharmapriya Dias appeared in Burning Birds.

Cinematographer - Kalinga Deshapriya, Editors  - Ajith Ramanayake & Katharina Wartena, Make Up - Priyantha Dissanayaka, Art director - Piyathissa Akurambada, Costume Designer - Ajantha Alahakoon, Sound Engineers -  Nicolas D'halluin & Aruna Priyantha Kaluarchchi, Color grading - Elie Akoka, Assistant Director - Aruna Thilakarathne, Second Assistant Director - Niroshan Edirimanna and Production Manager- Harald Karunathilaka also contributed to the film.

In the meantime the Tokyo Talent Campus has invited Sanjeewa Pushpakumara to given a special lecture on filmmaking to future Asian filmmakers. These young filmmakers currently following a filmmaking workshop at Tokyo Talent Campus.  The Tokyo Talent Campus is an institution of Tokyo FILMeX International Film Festival.
