‘No equal status for Muslim women’ Featured

Authorities have failed to treat Muslim women as equal citizens of Sri Lanka, female Muslim activists allege.

They note that Muslim women are subjected to complete disregard and girls exposed to abuse as a result of the Muslim marriage and divorce act.

Calling for a revision of the act, activist Ermisa Tegal has told BBC Sandeshaya that Muslim women were denied equal status by clause 16.1 of the constitution.

A person from any religion or community should have the right to seek court redress against the violation of fundamental rights, but the clause in question denied that opportunity for Muslim women, she said.
