Reporting the grand event where the foundation stone was laid for the factory, the President's Media Unit had reported that the German government had invested US$26.5 for the project.
However, in an email to ’Sri Lanka Mirror’, Deputy Head of Mission - Dr. Michael Dohmen responded to our queries as follows :
“According to our state of knowledge currently there isn’t any involvement of Volkswagen in the project. And the German government hasn’t made any investments, either.”
He added : "Of course the German Embassy is welcoming and assisting German companies that want to invest in Sri Lanka. In May 2016 the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy Uwe Beckmeyer visited Sri Lanka with a large business delegation. This was a follow-up of the visit of President Sirisena in Germany. Later in September/October another German business delegation came to Sri Lanka. The Embassy is committed to foster the economic cooperation between our countries."
