President has no ethical right – Ajith P. Perera Featured

President Maithripala has no ethical right to continue with the executive presidency after coming power with a pledge to abolish the position, says deputy minister of the UNP Ajith P. Perera.

The SLFP is entitled to take its own decisions, but those in that party who had a policy against the executive presidency too, had no right ethically to call for its continuation, he says.

Perera, who is also deputy secretary of the UNP, is responding to a remark by SLFP minister Sarath Amunugama that his party’s central committee has decided that the executive presidency should continue in order to devolve powers as a solution to the national question.

The deputy minister said he did not believe the president and a majority of the SLFP would support that decision, which he said, had been taken owing to the party’s internal struggle for power.

The party’s central committee has already decided that president Sirisena should seek a second term at the 2020 election, as announced by its general secretary Duminda Dissanayake in Anuradhapura yesterday (09).
