They said their children had been interviewed and even textbooks provided and classrooms readied in order for them to be admitted to grade one at Hingurakdamana Maha Vidyalaya.
However, the Polonnaruwa zonal education office has sent a letter, instructing not to make any admission, the principal of the school has informed the parents.
A parent, D.M.A. Thilakaratne said chief minister Peshala Jayaratne had promised admission for their children when he visited the school for its 70th anniversary ceremony.
Northcentral provincial education director Nirmala Ekanayake said the school would not admit children for primary classes.
She asked parents to admit their children to a nearby primary school.
