Tea smallholdings chief assaults union leader (audio) Featured

Chairman of the Tea Smallholdings Development Authority Wijeratne Devagedara has accused the authority’s Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya branch president W.V.S. Surasinghe of having sent a letter to his wife against him, and assaulted him in front of other top officials at his room.

An audio tape of the incident is available with us.

Surasinghe, a public servant for 25 years and due to retire in one and a half years, has also been transferred to Galle following the assault.

He has lodged a complaint regarding the assault to Thalangama police on January 17, and also complained to the UNP headquarters Sirikotha.

Accusations against chairman

Meanwhile, Devagedara has been accused by the Authority’s trade unions for having employed a girl, who had been recruited as a gardener, as his secretary.

He has taken no action with regard to a complaint lodged by Surasinghe against human resources manager Harsha de Silva over his having submitted fake certificates and being given an undue promotion.

Devagedara is protecting the HR manager in order to get appointments, positions, transfers and other privileges for his loyalists.

De Silva is the deputy president of the Authority’s SLFP trade union.
