Detach Central Bank from PM, president urged Featured

The Central Bank should be detached from the prime minister’s control at least temporarily in order for the smooth dissemination of required information and evidence to the presidential commission that will investigate the bond issue, top officials of the bank have told ‘Divaina.’

While appreciating the appointment of the presidential commission of inquiry, they urge president Maithripala Sirisena to pay attention to their request.

Only a Central Bank detached from the ministry of national policy and economic affairs that come under the prime minister will allow officials to give information to the commission without fear or suspicion, they note.

Also, top officials who are responsible for the bond issue still hold positions in the CB, and they too, should be removed temporarily, or else the purpose of the commission will come to nothing, according to them.

Incumbent governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy is under pressure to retain those officials, including his secretary who also worked under his predecessor Arjun Mahendran.
