Mahinda, G.L. planned federal constitution – Ranawaka (video) Featured

Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has strongly criticized former presidents Chandrika Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa for having attempted to make Sri Lanka a federal state.

It was the then ministers Mahinda Rajapaksa and G.L. Peiris and chief justice at the time Sarath N. de Silva, who had prepared a federal constitution for Kumaratunga, he charged at a function at Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy yesterday (25).

However, their attempt was defeated by the Maha Sangha, said Ranawaka.

The constitutional proposal known as ‘the package’ introduced in 2000 during the Kumaratunga regime was rejected by the UNP as well as Tamil parties.

Referring to the opposition to a so-called new constitution, Ranawaka said not even a draft for a new constitution was ready at present.

A new constitution will ensure the unitary status of the country, priority place given to Buddhism as well as the right and freedom for other religions, he added.
