Polls for all LGs next year? Featured

The government is expected to take a decision that elections for all provincial councils should take place at the same time next year.

The last time elections were held, they were irregular - with polls for eastern, northcentral and Sabaragamuwa PCs held in 2012, while north, northwest and central going to the polls in 2013, and Uva, south and west having elections in 2014.

Elections are due this year for eastern, northcentral and Sabaragamuwa PCs.

A new electoral system is to be introduced for parliamentary and PC polls, but the system for the PCs is yet to be discussed.

Both the ruling and the opposition parties could measure their public popularity if LG elections are held in a period interim of the parliament’s tenure, said UPFA general secretary Mahinda Amaraweera.

In the past, the then governments used their maximum strength at LG polls that were held in a scattered manner, causing massive expenses and leading to violence.

Meanwhile, government sources say the LG elections due this year will be postponed for next year.
