Sri Lanka's Independence celebrated in Malaysia

Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia celebrated Sri Lanka's 69th Independence anniversary with the Sri Lankan community in Malaysia at the Embassy premises. Senator Dato’ Chong Sin Woon, Deputy Minister of Education of Malaysia attended the event as the Guest of Honour. Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan too graced the occasion.

The event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by High commissioner Designate to Malaysia AJM Muzammil. The National Anthem was sung in Sinhala and Tamil with the participation of children from the Sri Lankan community. Two minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to fallen war heroes. A religious ceremony followed conducted by the religious dignitaries of the respective faiths. The messages of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera were read-out in all three languages.

Thereafter, the High commissioner addressed gathering and noted that the celebrations were particularly meaningful because of the current positive changes in Sri Lanka and highlighted the steps taken by the President and Prime Minster to obtain Social, Political and Economic freedom for the Nation. The High commissioner, further stated that, ‘It is a time when the government has embarked upon far reaching democratic reforms that would usher in a new Sri Lanka in which all Sri Lankans belonging to different ethnic groups and religions, rise as one nation to bring about a new political culture of good governance.

Speaking about the Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Malaysia, the High commissioner highlighted that, “ As we celebrate this occasion, the Government and people of Sri Lanka look forward to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation with the Government and people of Malaysia on the basis of our shared values, our commitment for democracy, good governance and for international peace and security.
