War tribunals only for the wrongdoers - Chandrika Featured

With the establishment of the office of the missing persons (OMP), not all military personnel, but only those who done very bad things will be tried by military tribunals, says ex-president Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Speaking in Colombo yesterday (20), she refuted the belief by some in the military that the OMP would take all to military tribunals.

The establishment of the OMP to ensure justice for victims of the war is in its final stage, and will become functional this year, she said.

Parliament has passed the proposal to set up the office, but the president is yet to issue the gazette notification to announce under whom it should function.

The UNHRC sessions in March will raise the setting up of the OMP.

North chief minister C.V. Vigneswaran has told the European Union ambassador who was in Jaffna recently that no action has been taken to establish this office.
