Kabir hits out at Finance Ministry Featured

Public Enterprise Development Minister Kabir Hashim has raised objections over the move by the Finance Ministry to pay an increased amount as compensation to a company than the amount approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Hashim has told Cabinet yesterday (21) that despite a Cabinet decision on the amount to be paid as compensation to Aircap Company, the Finance Ministry has ignored the Cabinet decision as well as the subject minister (Hashim) and decided to pay an increased amount as compensation to the company.

The approved amount to be paid as compensation was between US4 75 and 85 million. However, the Finance Ministry has approved a payment of US$ 154 million to be paid to the company.

Aircap was assigned by the previous regime in 2012 to purchase aircaft. However, the current government cancelled the agreement and decided to pay compensation to the company. The amount to be paid as compensation was decided by a Cabinet sub committee.

Ministers Sarath Amunugama and Patali Champika Ranawaka along with several other Cabinet ministers have called for the payments to the company to be temporarily halted.

The President it is learnt has directed the payment of compensation to be halted until the matter was clarified.
