Ravi advised to rectify ‘criminal offence’! Featured

Finance minister Ravi Karunanayake was advised by his colleagues at today’s (28) cabinet meeting to immediately cancel the controversial gazette notification on Central Bank bond sales and issue a new one in its place.

Sarath Amunugama, Champika Ranawaka and Harsha de Silva have noted that it was a criminal offence to have issued a gazette notification in that manner.

Before someone goes to court, that gazette notification should be cancelled, they insisted.

Giving evidence before the presidential commission of inquiry yesterday, government printer Gangani Kalpana Liyanage said it was on the advice of the CB’s state credit department in December 2016 that the gazette notification in question had been issued with ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s signature.

In the meantime, the cabinet was told that no gazette notification had been issued for any of the CB bond sales that took place under Rajapaksa regime’s governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
