Thalatha disputes Ravi’s proposal to cabinet Featured

EXCLUSIVE : Foreign employment minister Thalatha Athukorale has disputed a proposal by finance minister Ravi Karunanayake to raise the minimum salary of an expatriate Sri Lankan worker to 350 dollars from this year.

She submitted a proposal to the cabinet meeting yesterday (28) to fix the salary at the previous 300 dollars.

Her cabinet paper says Karunanayake’s suggestion through the last budget to increase the salary and insurance coverage for expatriate workers posed a threat to obtaining foreign jobs for Sri Lankans.

As per a budget proposal, the minimum salary of a skilled worker has been fixed at 450 USD and of an unskilled worker at 350 USD, to become effective from 01st February 2017.

A 300 USD minimum salary proposed through the 2016 budget did not materialize.
