Ministers tell Sagala to rein in the underworld Featured

At yesterday’s (28) cabinet meeting, ministers urged law and order minister Sagala Ratnayake to get the police to rein in underworld activities.

Minister Chandima Weerakkody said measures to curb the underworld came under discussion at the meeting.

Weerakkody told the media in Colombo today that the police had the responsibility of restraining the underworld.

Police now have the full independence and freedom to do that job, he added.

Meanwhile, cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne referred to the shooting on a prison bus in Kalutara and said it was not the first time such an incident had taken place, but the first under the present government.

He noted that many such shootings had occurred under the previous regime.

Senaratne said the OIC of Kalutara north police has been suspended, while investigations into the shooting were in progress.
