Former Army commander and minister - Sarath Fonseka says that
If Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera had stated that military intelligence is being destroyed due to arrests of military intelligence officers, the Thera had done so with a different agenda on his mind, says former Army commander and minister - Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.
Fonseka emphasised that the entire military intelligence structure does not fall apart simply because several military personnel were arrested.
Fonseka was responding to criticisms of several groups of the government and the Joint Opposition on this matter, during media briefing in Colombo yesterday (07).
Responding to Rathana Thera's suggestion to have a separate investigation board to probe the issues involving military intelligence personnel, Fonseka said that there is no such procedure in Sri Lanka.
He added that nobody, even the military or the President, is above the law.
Gota behind Intel Ops in Colombo
When being asked whether he shouldn't be taking at least some responsibility as attacks on journalists had taken place during his tenure as Army commander, Fonseka replied that the Army commander cannot be responsible for every single act committed by 200,000 military personnel.
He has also added that the Intelligence operations in Colombo were conducted by the then Defence secretary - Gotabhaya Rajapaksa during his tenure as Army commander.
