Marikkar questions police protection given to ‘Kolamba Haadayaa’ Featured

UNP MP S.M. Marikkar questioned law and peace minister Sagala Ratnayake in parliament yesterday (09) about the basis for giving Prasanna Solangaarachchi a three-member police protection.

Marikkar asked as to how Solangaarachchi, merely a SLFP organizer (for Avissawella) could be entitled to police protection, whereas as an MP facing death threats, he was getting lesser protection.

He went onto say that the ex-MP who was a threat to Solangaarachchi was remanded on a murder charge, and that he was not facing any such threat now.

Responding, minister Ratnayake said there was a proper procedure to provide protection to people’s representatives and other VIPs, adding that proper action would be taken if that procedure had been violated in this case, even the removal of the officers responsible.

He said he was not aware of the protection given to Solangaarachchi and said he would inquire into that.

President’s friend

Solangaarachchi supported Maithripala Sirisena when he contested the presidential polls as the common candidate and is considered a close friend of his.

He will be a member of the presidential entourage when Mr. Sirisena tours Russia on the 22nd.

At the last general election, he campaigned by calling himself ‘Kolamba Haadayaa’ (chap from Colombo).
