Rajitha to handle campaign for new constitution Featured

Minister Rajitha Senaratne will be handling a promotional campaign to prepare the public opinion for a new constitution before placing it before them at a referendum.

Summoning heads of several state media institutions recently, Senaratne told them that the president and the prime minister have entrusted him with the task.

He will take up the campaign through the state media with the involvement of civil society organizations.

However, a majority in the SLFP and the JHU is against holding a referendum on a new constitution.

Foreign affairs minister Mangala Samaraweera has said in Geneva that the government was in the process of formulating a new constitution that had provisions to prevent communal clashes in the future.

That constitution would be placed before the public at a referendum, he said.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations that contributed to the regime change have formed a ‘national movement for a new constitution.’

The movement will hold its first seminar at Sri Lanka Foundation in Colombo today, starting at 3.00 pm.
