Somali pirates free ship with Lankan crew

The Aris 13 oil tanker and its eight-member Sri Lankan crew have been freed by the Somali pirates.

The ship’s chief officer Dileepa Nishan Ranaweera thanked the government for having  mediated to secure freedom for them.

They were freed following sporadic exchange of fire between the captors and the Somali armed forces yesterday (16).

At the request of the ship’s captain, president Maithripala Sirisena mediated and got the Somali armed forces to cease the fire.

Navy commander Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, deputy foreign minister Dr. Harsha de Silva as well as the Sri Lankan ambassador in the UAE mediated in the talks with the Somali authorities, the ship’s owner and other parties.
