‘CMC has made a business out of garbage’ Featured

Auditor general Gamini Wijesinghe rules out giving a ‘clean report’ to Colombo municipal authorities as long as the Meethotamulla waste dump exists.

‘Lankadeepa’ quotes him as saying so at a workshop at the official residence of the Colombo mayor.

He says one reason for the waste dump collapse is that municipal officials had disregarded warnings by the AG against their haphazard waste disposal mechanism.

Wijesinghe also says the CMC has made a business out of garbage, and it wants to see more and more garbage being disposed by the public.

It cannot wash its hands off the matter by collecting the garbage and dumping it somewhere, which is illegal, an act of terrorism and that should not be done by a state institution, he says.
