3 mental patients kept at hospital lavatory for 8 yrs. Featured

Three mental patients, including a woman, are being kept at a lavatory for eight years at the Habaraduwa government hospital (Kalugala hospital) without any treatment, ‘Mawbima’ reports.

Personal details of these patients are not clearly available with the hospital’s registration counter.

The hospital is without a psychiatrist or any medicines to treat mental patients, a hospital spokesman said.

The Unawatuna hospital, which can treat such patients, refused to accept these three patients, he said.

They have been given assumed names – Upali and Gampaha for the two men and Sumanawathie for the woman, who had come from Karapitiya hospital in 2008.

Other residential patients harass the three mental patients, who are not visited by their relatives either.

The hospital has so far no informed any relevant authority regarding their plight.
