‘President, cabinet are with premier’ Featured

Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will have the backing of the president and the entire cabinet if the joint opposition moves a no-confidence motion against him over the Central Bank bond issue, cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said.

Such a move will boomerang on the JO, Senaratne told the media yesterday (02).

The COPE report into the CB bond issue does not implicate the premier, he noted, adding that Wickremesinghe had fulfilled his responsibilities by referring the report to the attorney general for appropriate action.

The media questions the government over this matter, but had they questioned the COPE reports during the previous regime, they would have suffered the same fate that of Lasantha Wickrematunge, said Senaratne.

PM ready to give statement

Meanwhile, PM Wickremesinghe says he is ready to give a statement if the Bribery Commission wants him to do so.

Some of his accusers are facing various allegations and they are doing so in order to cover up their own nudity, he charged.

The premier was speaking at the handover of appointment letter as the UNP Kelaniya organizer to minister Sarath Fonseka at Sirikotha.

He went onto say that he did not mind the accusations leveled against him, as he respected the rule the law, and would not interfere in its enforcement.

Wickremesinghe questioned as to whether any fair investigation by COPE had taken place in the past 10 years, as there was no rule of law during that period.

He wanted his accusers to apologize to the nation, adding that the dividends of adherence to the rule of law were evident today.
