44 countries promise disaster relief

Forty four countries have promised to the foreign affairs minister to grant relief for those affected by the floods and landslides, says minister Mahinda Samarasinghe.

Thirty countries have already sent aid, including three shiploads of supplies by India, he says.

President Maithripala Sirisena has decided that financial assistance would be credited to a separate account of the finance ministry to be used to build houses for the affected families.

The president has ordered that the houses be built in accordance with environment impact assessments.

Banks to assist schoolchildren

Thousands of schoolchildren have been affected by the adverse weather and they will be assisted, with the support of banks, to continue their education, said deputy minister Eran Wickremaratne.

Each bank will be responsible for one district, he said, and the Education Department has been advised to provide textbooks, uniforms, shoes for the children.indian 31 05 17indian 670px 31 05 17
