Criminal responsibility age limits to be amended Featured

The minimum age of criminal capacity is to be amended, says the Justice Ministry.

As per provisions in the penal code, a child below eight years has no criminal responsibility.

This age limit is to be brought up to 12 years.

Also, if an offence is committed by a child aged between eight and 12 years, the guilt is decided on the basis of the mental condition of the child.

That will be raised to 12 and 14 years.

The cabinet has approved the gazetting of the revisions and to submit them for parliamentary approval.
