Private bus owners to go ahead with strike Featured

Private bus owners say they will go ahead with their planned strike tomorrow as a mark of protest against the budgetary proposal to raise the minimum fine for a traffic offence to Rs. 2,500.

President of Lanka Private Bus Owners Association Gemunu Wijeratne says the increase is unfair, as traffic rule breaches are possible due to overburdened roads.

Unlike previous governments, the present regime has not consulted them in preparing the two budgets it has presented, says All Island Private Bus Owners Association president Anjana Priyanjith.

He said it was apparent minister Ravi Karunanayake was unaware of the condition of the country’s roads, and it was further unfortunate president Maithripala Sirisena could not comprehend it either.

However, Karunanayake defends the decision, saying it has been taken for the protection of drivers and the pavement walkers.
