Tissa is a political prisoner - Mahinda Featured

Tissa Attanayake is clearly a political prisoner, claims ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa, saying that the accusations filed against the former UNP general secretary are entirely an act of political revenge.

Rajapaksa was speaking to the media after visiting Attanayake at prison hospital in Borella yesterday (21).

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights has been used to send him behind bars, making him the first Sri Lankan to be arrested and remanded under the ICCPR, said the former president.

Attanayake was taken into custody for allegedly having prepared a fake document, on a charge of provocation for ethnic or religious hatred, but the said document did not promote such hatred, he went onto say.

The ICCPR says, “prohibition of any propaganda for war as well as any advocacy of national or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence by law.”
