No plastic bottles allowed for fishermen at sea Featured

An immediate ban has been imposed on the use of small and medium sized plastic bottles by fishermen when they go out to sea for fishing.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says fishermen should now use a permanent container to store water for their needs while at sea.

All fishing boats will be checked at fisheries ports to ensure that this prohibition is adhered to, he says.

Around 50,000 fishing boats that go out to sea every day dispose of around five tons of plastic bottles and other plastic refuse.

These plastic refuse cause serious harm to corals, weeds and fish in the sea.
