Lawyer Kumarapperuma complains against LeN editor red alert order Featured

Lawyer Upul Kumarapperuma today (29) wrote to Judicial Services Commission secretary Pradeep Jayatilake, seeking an investigation into the arrest warrant order issued by Gampaha magistrate Kavindya Nanayakkara against Lanka e News editor Sandaruwan Senadheera.

The complaint alleges the order to be illegal and malicious.

The magistrate issued the red alert against Senadheera for having posted pictures of a suspect in the assault of former ‘Rivira’ editor Upali Tennakoon allegedly before an identification parade took place.

Giving details about his complaint, Kumarapperuma told Sri Lanka Mirror the suspect had been arrested on or around 15 July 2016, but as a suspect in the Mt. Lavinia court case into the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge.

The website published a picture of the suspect three days later, on July 18.

At that time, the suspect had not been named by the CID as a suspect in the Tennakoon assault case, being heard by magistrate Nanayakkara.

The identification parade took place on August 26.

In his complaint, Kumarapperuma alleges magistrate Nanayakkara has issued the arrest warrant as she has been angered over a LeN article critical of a comment about a case being heard at the Colombo magistrate’s court.

Given below is the complaint lodged with the JSC secretary:
