'No decision yet to merge north & east' Featured

There will definitely be a lasting political solution in the proposed constitutional amendment to the northern conflict, but no decision has yet been taken to merge the northern and eastern provinces, said opposition leader R. Sampanthan.

Sampanthan, who also heads the TNA, was speaking at a meeting yesterday (30) at his Trincomalee home with MPs from the district.

Merging the two provinces for a political solution was still under consideration and both the Tamil and Muslim parties should reach consensus on that account, he said.

The opposition leader hoped a lasting political solution to the ethnic issue could be found before the end of this year.
