According to sources, Basil has urged Wimal to continue politics with him from one front. However, Wimal has not agreed to this. Instead, it was reported that Wimal and Udaya Gammanpila had recently aired certain terms to accept the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The newspaper further reports :
According to JO sources, Wimal Weerawansa had managed to evade arrest until recently due to a deal between Basil Rajapaksa and an UNP bigwig to split the SLFP and and create a anti-Maithri political party. It is due to this deal that Wimal had evaded arrest until recently despite facing several allegations.
Although the FCID was prepared to arrest Weerawansa several times, this had been prevented by ‘higher orders’.
However, he was finally arrested after the President met with the FCID officials and the issue of political influences was taken up. The President had then directed the FCID officials to do their duty without bowing down to any influence.
