Opportunity to purchase elephant for Rs. 10 million

The Wild Life Ministry has decided to provide elephants from Pinnawela to be used in Buddhist pageants and to Temples and religious institutions and the elite requesting for elephants.

The religious institutions or persons who receive such elephants would be held responsible for the animal’s welfare and upkeep. Such persons will have to pay the Wild Life Ministry Rs. 10 million for an elephant.

However, although the elephants will be entrusted to these religious institutions and elite persons, the ownership of the animal will remain with the Wild Life Ministry.

The proposal forwarded in this regard by Wild Life Minister Jayawickrema Perera was approved by Cabinet.
