Traffic offence fine raised to protect lives

The budget proposal to raise the minimum traffic offence fine to Rs. 2,500 is aimed at protecting the lives of both drivers and the passengers, minister Ravi Karunanayake.

He is responding to calls by private bus associations to withdraw the increase.

According to police records, nearly 3,000 people have died in traffic accidents this year.
