Budget proposal goes against WHO charter

The budget proposal requiring the CTC to contribute Rs. 500 million towards the presidential fund for the prevention of tobacco and alcohol use has come in for criticism.

Health activists note this goes against clause 13 of the WHO’s tobacco use elimination charter, to which Sri Lanka is a signatory.

This clause prohibits countries from entering into agreements with tobacco companies.
