Vidya murder : death sentence for 7! (update)

The three-judge bench of Jaffna High Court today, sentenced seven of the nine accused in the Sivaloganathan Vidya’s abduction, rape and murder on 9th street Pungudutivu, Kytes, Jaffna.  

Vavuniya High Court Judge B. Shasi Mahendran is President of the Trial-at-Bar. The other members of the bench are Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilancheliyan and Trincomalee High Court Judge A. Premashankar delivered the verdict.

The verdict was delivered subsequent to the completion of evidence of the plaintiff party, state evidence and evidence of the defendants.

The verdict was delivered by Vavuniya High Court Judge B. Shasi Mahendran and Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilancheliyan while second accused Poobalasingham Jeyakumar, 3rd accused Poobalasingham Thawakumar, 4th accused Mahalingham Shashidharan, 5th accused Thillenathan Chandrahasan, 6th accused Shivadevan Dushanthan alias Periyambi, 8th accused Jeyadharan Kokilan and 9th accused Mahalingham Shashikumar alias Swiss Kumar were handed the death sentence.

The Deputy Solicitor General Kumar Ratnam, State Attorneys Nishanth Nagaratnam, Laksi de Silva and Malini Wigneshwaran appeared for the plaintiff party.

President’s Counsel Suranga Balasingha and Mahinda Jayawardena appeared for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Attorney Arumugam Ragupathi Pillai appeared for the 5th accused, Attorney Sinnarasa Ketheeswaran appeared for the 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th accused while State Counsel Wignarajah Jeyantha appeared for all nine accused.

Delivering of Vidya murder Verdict commences!

The announcement of the verdict in the Vidya murder in Jaffna, commenced a short while ago, the Jaffna high Court sources revealed.

The 332 page verdict is currently being delivered by the Vavuniya High Court Judge Balendra Shashi Mahendran.

The case was being heard before a three judge bench from since June 12.

The verdict is being delivered on the nine suspects connected to the murder, Pubalasingham Indrakumar, Pubalasingham Jeyakumar, Pubalasingham Thawakumar, Mahalingham Shashidharan, Tilleinathan Chandrahasan, Sivadevan Dushanth, Palani Rubasingham Kugadasan, Jeyatharan Kokilan and Mahalingam Shashikumar alias Swiss Kumar.

The case was filed at the Jaffna High Court under 47 indictments.

Vavuniya High Court Judge B. Sasi Mahendran is President of the Trial-at-Bar. The other members of the bench are Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilancheliyan and Trincomalee High Court Judge A. Premashankar.

Having being notified of the verdict being delivered on September 27, the mother of Vidya, Shivayoganathan Saraswathie was present in Court, according to reports.

Heavy security was deployed in the vicinity of the Jaffna Court complex as the verdict was being delivered.

Shivayoganathan Vidya was abducted on May 13, 2015 and raped and murdered.

The case was being investigated under the direction of CID Senior DIG Ravi Seneviratne and DIG Sudath Nagahamulla, under the supervision of  SSP Shani Abeysekara, and SSP – B.S. Tissera by a team comprising OIC of the Mass Theft Investigation Unit IP Nishantha Silva.
