Number of LTTE cadres in custody revealed

After the war ended in 2009, the number LTTE members who either surrendered or were captured by the government forces were 10,719, it was revealed in parliament today.

According to Prison Reforms and Resettlement Minister D. M. Swaminathan, 12,173 ex- LTTE cadres have so far been rehabilitated.

He further said that the number of LTTE detained held in prisons stands at 150.

Of them 66 are being detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, said Swaminathan in response to a question raised by JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

It was also revealed that the number of prisoners serving over a year is 1,700.

He said among them are 77 non LTTE prisoners who are serving over seven years in prison

Anura Kumara queried as to what measures will be taken with regard to these prisoners.
