Security ring around ships at Hambantota port (update)

The Navy is engaged in an operation to release the two merchant ships at the Hambantota Magampura port, held by the protesting port workers.

Currently a security ring has been created by the Navy in order to release the vessels.

The Hambantota port workers commenced a protest a few days ago, demanding that they be absorbed into the Port Authority permanent staff cadre. The port activities have been severely affected due to the protest.

According to the protesting workers, the Navy personnel had attempted to attack the protestors in order to disperse the protestors.

However, when contacted the Navy said they were engaged in an operation to rescue the two merchant ships held captive over the past few days by the protestors.
