Last July, Gunaratne fractured his left thumb while fielding in the first Test against India in a home series.
The 31-year-old all-rounder has now resumed training, but has only bowled, and did not do any batting practices, say Sri Lanka Cricket sources.
Selectors hoped to include Perera for the Test series against India but, that would not be possible, as sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara has ordered physical fitness certificates mandatory.
He is back at training, with the hope of joining the team as opening batsman and wicket-keeper.
SLC’s CEO Ashley de Silva said Anjelo Mathews too, would be considered for the India tour.
