Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that Sri Lanka has to pay an amount of 890 million Indian rupees to the Indian Government for the aid and support extended when the X-Press Pearl and the New Diamond vessels were in distress in Sri Lankan waters.

Mr. Rajapakshe said this during the Derana 360 programme aired last night (22) on “TV Derana”.

The minister said that the Indian Government has informed this request in writing.

“The Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force and the Indian Navy worked hard to put out the fire aboard the New Diamond vessel and prevent the environmental damage at our request. In terms of the contribution made by the Indian Navy, they have asked us for 400 million Indian rupees (INR) as compensation. These are not rumours. The document they have sent must be in the file. I shall disclose it later. They have requested 490 million INR for X-Press Pearl and 400 million INR for New Diamond,” he said.
