Midigama Ruwan extradited from Dubai

Ruwan Chamara alias Midigama Ruwan, an individual implicated in organized criminal activities and a primary suspect associated with an international narcotics syndicate, has been extradited to Sri Lanka from Dubai.

According to law enforcement officials, a specialized team from the Criminal Investigation Department facilitated his transfer to the country earlier today.

Midigama Ruwan is suspected of orchestrating an attempted operation to extricate Harak Kata, also known as Nadun Chinthaka, from the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department.

Notably, Midigama Ruwan was apprehended by authorities in Dubai approximately two months ago.

He is considered to be one of the two people who had led Harak Kata’s drug network after the latter’s arrest in Madagascar and extradition to Sri Lanka.

Hirunika sentenced to 3 years rigorous imprisonment

Former MP Hirunika Premachandra has been sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

The former SJB parliamentarian was sentenced after being found guilty of being involved in the abduction of a youth in the Dematagoda area on December 21, 2015 using a Defender and his wrongful detention.

The sentencing was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja today (June 28).

Premachandra had been accused of involvement in abducting, assaulting and wrongfully detaining the youth, identified as Amila Priyanka Amarasinghe, who had been employed at a shop in the Dematagoda area.

In 2017, seven persons identified as supporters of Premachandra pleaded guilty before the court. However, Ms. Premachandra did not plead guilty to any of the charges levelled against her.

Grama Niladhari strike stalls essential services

The strike launched by Grama Niladhari Officers is still ongoing.

The strike was launched citing several concerns including the absence of a Grama Niladhari Service Constitution.

Co-Convener of the Grama Niladhari Officers’ Union Jagath Chandralal said that due to this, many government services have stalled.

He said these include essential services such as issuance of Grama Niladhari certificates and death registration.

Grama Niladhari Officers launched this strike yesterday after taking various union actions to pursue their demands on several occasions.
