Grama Niladhari strike stalls essential services

The strike launched by Grama Niladhari Officers is still ongoing.

The strike was launched citing several concerns including the absence of a Grama Niladhari Service Constitution.

Co-Convener of the Grama Niladhari Officers’ Union Jagath Chandralal said that due to this, many government services have stalled.

He said these include essential services such as issuance of Grama Niladhari certificates and death registration.

Grama Niladhari Officers launched this strike yesterday after taking various union actions to pursue their demands on several occasions.

Striking uni. non-academic staff reach agreement with authorities

The university non-academic staff trade unions have stated that discussions held with the authorities regarding their demands were successful.

Co-chairman of the University Trade Union Joint Committee (UTUJC) Dhammika S. Priyantha said that the officials agreed to provide acceptable solutions to their issues within today (July 02) or tomorrow (July 03).

“The strike action will only be terminated if they provide our monthly allowance which was approved in 2017. Accordingly, an agreement was reached to bring this issue before the Cabinet of Ministers to find immediate solutions to the relevant matter”, said the UTUJC co-chairman.

However, if necessary solutions are not provided, the strike action would be further continued, he added.

SJB decides not to support national govt. under RW

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentary group has unanimously approved a resolution that the party will not support any national government under President Ranil Wickremesinghe, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said today (July 02).

“We declined a national government proposal by President Wickremesinghe two years ago. We renewed this decision today,” Madduma Bandara told journalists in Parliament.

The resolution was proposed by MP Buddika Pathirana when the Parliamentary Group met this morning.

Kanjipani Imran secures political asylum from France

Notorious underworld leader and drug kingpin – Kanjipani Imran has secured poliltical asylum in France, reports the ‘Lankadeepa’ newspaper.

It is said to be the first time an underworld leader of Sri Lanka has been granted political asylum overseas.

Kanjipani Imran is also among the criminals red noticed by Interpol. 

Initially, he had fled to Dubai where he operated his criminal activities before being arrested and brought to Sri Lanka in 2019.   

When he was on bail, he had reportedly fled the country again through Mannar to India. It was reported then that India’s RAW agency had aided this. 

From there, he had proceeded to France, where he has obtained political asylum.
