Former Member of Parliament Hirunika Premachandra has been ordered to be released on bail by the Colombo High Court.
Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja issued the order today (22), following the consideration of the bail application filed by Premachandra’s attorneys.
This decision came after the objections raised by the Attorney General’s Department against the bail application on July 11.
Premachandra had filed an appeal with the Appeals Court, seeking to invalidate the recent verdict by the Colombo High Court that sentenced her to three years of rigorous imprisonment.
She also sought her acquittal from the case.
In conjunction with this appeal, her lawyers filed a bail application requesting her release.
The former Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentarian was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment after being found guilty of involvement in the abduction of a youth in the Dematagoda area on December 21, 2015, using a Defender vehicle and his wrongful detention. She was found guilty of 18 charges, with a fine of Rs. 20,000 imposed for each charge.
The court order stated that failure to pay the fines would result in an additional six months of imprisonment for each charge.
