Refurbishment of Superior Courts complex commences with Chinese aid (Pics)

Refurbishment of the Hulftsdorp Supreme Court complex commenced today (31), with financial assistance of RMB 240 million from the Chinese Government.

The total construction area of the ‘China Aid Comprehensive Refurbishment Project of Sri Lanka Complex’, is 23,602 sq. metres.

The ceremony to start the renovation work was held at 10.00 am today with the participation of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, PC, Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC, and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka – Qi Zhenhong.

Strengthening diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and China, in 1998, the Supreme Court complex was built with a grant from the Chinese Government and handed over to the Government of Sri Lanka, followed by the signing of an agreement between both countries in 2016. According to this agreement, it has been decided to extensively renovate the Hulftsdorp Supreme Court complex.

The renovation work will be carried out within 32 months in two phases. Under the first phase, The section housing the Court of Appeal will be renovated under the first phase while the area of the Supreme Court will be renovated under the second phase. The renovations are to be completed on Oct. 17, 202.

We solemnly announce the passing of Mrs. Pushpa Ranjani Liyanage, cherished wife of late Milk Board manager – Mr. L.S. Rodrigo and the beloved mother of ‘Sri Lanka Mirror’ Chief Editor – Mr. Kelum Shivantha.

Remains will lie at Supreme Rest Funeral Parlour, Kelanimulla from 11.00am to 10.30pm on April 23 and on April 24 morning.

Final rites will be held at the Pilapitiya Cemetery crematorium on April 24 at 3.00 pm.

Country has sufficient insulin stocks – Nalinda

Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has assured that the government has already distributed sufficient insulin stocks for the next four months.

Therefore, he urged the public not to have any unnecessary fears over the matter.

Speaking earlier today (April 22) during the weekly Cabinet briefing, he assured that there is enough insulin available in the country until September this year.
He added that measures are taken to maintain medicine stocks sufficient for a period of four to six months to prevent any shortages.

Weather advisory for severe lightning & heavy rain

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for strong lightning and heavy rain in several parts of the country, effective until 11:00 pm today (April 22).

Thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning are expected this evening and tonight in the Eastern, Uva, Central, and Northern provinces, as well as in the Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts.

Temporary strong winds may also occur during these storms.
