Mobile coconut sales programme launched

A mobile coconut sales programme has been launched to provide coconuts to consumers at an affordable price.

The programme is launched under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife, Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation, and Community Infrastructure.

The first phase of the programme is held today (Oct. 23) in the Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte and the Kaduwela Municipal Council areas.

A press release by the ministry states that mobile coconut sales vehicles have been deployed near the Welikada Police Station in Colombo, the Kirulapone market, the Finance Ministry premises, and the Welikada Police Station in the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council area.

Additional locations include the Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theater in Nugegoda, the Sethsiripaya premises covering Kaduwela and Battaramulla, and near the Coconut Cultivation Board on Denzil Kobbekaduwa Mawatha.

Under this programme, coconuts are to be sold at a price of Rs. 100 – 120.

Initially, the Coconut Cultivation Board is to supply 10,000 coconuts to the market on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Afterwards, 15,000 coconuts are to be released to the market weekly, as per the consumer demand.

The media release states that the Kurunegala Plantations Company and the Chilaw Plantations Company have agreed to supply 1,500 and 3,000 coconuts respectively, on a daily basis.

Official chambers of fmr. Kaduwela Magistrate, sealed

The Kaduwela Police state that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken steps to seal the official chambers of former Kaduwela Magistrate Chanima Wijebandara at the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court.

She was granted the opportunity to arrive at the premises next Monday (May 19) and her personal belongings in the chambers.

Until then, the chambers will come under police protection.

The chambers were sealed over several complaints received by the JSC against Justice Wijebandara, reports say.

It is also reported that proceedings of the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court are suspended at the present.

9 Including IUSF convener released on bail

Nine individuals, including Madhushan Chandrajith, the convener of the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF), have been released on bail after being produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court yesterday (May 16).
The group was arrested yesterday protesting opposite the Ministry of Health, violating a court order. 

The protest was staged by members of the IUSF and the Joint Health Sciences Graduates’ Union.

Earlier in the day, Maligakanda Magistrate Lochani Abeywickrama issued an order, following a request by the Acting OIC of the Maradana Police, prohibiting Madhushan Chandrajith and others from entering Colombo Hospital Square, the Ministry of Health, and surrounding roads to conduct any protests. The order remains in effect until 5.00pm today.

Transport ministry displeased over train strike

The Transport and Highways Ministry has expressed their displeasure over the sudden train strike launched by the Sri Lanka Railways Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU).

A communiqué by the Ministry states that the strike was launched based on two demands – promoting Station Masters every 05 years and halting measures for new recruitments.

The communiqué further noted that Cabinet approval was granted at the beginning of this year for 909 recruitments to the Railways Department, which included 106 new Station Master positions.

Accordingly, the Ministry expressed its dissatisfaction over the sudden strike as steps had already been taken to address their demands.

The Ministry also raised doubts whether the union might be attempting to pursue other objectives by launching such a strike, thereby inconveniencing the public.The Ministry further notes that they would not hesitate to take all necessary measures to intervene and ensure the smooth railway operations.
