Kamindu, ICC emerging cricketer of the year

Published

Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis has been recognized as the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year following an exceptional 2024.

The 26-year-old left-hander scored 1451 runs across formats at an average of just over 50, solidifying his reputation as a key player for Sri Lanka.

Mendis, who had only one Test cap before 2024, ended the year as a consistent all-format player and a reliable middle-order asset. He was one of six batters globally to score over 1,000 Test runs in 2024, boasting the highest average among them.

His five centuries and three fifties helped Sri Lanka secure crucial wins, including against New Zealand, Bangladesh, and England.

Notably, Mendis matched Sir Don Bradman’s record by becoming the joint-third fastest player to reach 1,000 Test runs, achieving the milestone in just 13 innings.

His career-best unbeaten 182 against New Zealand in Galle was a standout performance, laying the foundation for a 2-0 series sweep and earning him the Player of the Match award.

Mendis also excelled during Sri Lanka’s historic three-Test series win in England, leading the team’s scoring efforts and contributing to their first victory on English soil in over a decade.

His remarkable year was further highlighted by being named ICC Player of the Month for both September and October, recognizing his consistent contributions with the bat.

Prem Thakkar, the Indian owner of the Galle Marvels franchise in the Lanka T10 League, has been sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for 10 years, after pleading guilty to a match-fixing charge under Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act.

Thakkar was also fined Rs. 6 million and ordered to pay Rs. 1 million in compensation. In addition, the Kandy High Court has granted a request by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit to download and examine data from Thakkar’s mobile phone as part of ongoing investigations.

The Attorney General filed the indictment earlier this year, accusing Thakkar of attempting to corrupt West Indies cricketer Andre Fletcher by offering him incentives to influence the outcome of a game involving Galle Marvels during the Lanka T10 League in December 2024.
