Prison sources said that the clash between two groups of inmates at the Galle Prison, which occurred on Sunday, broke out after water from one inmate’s bucket fell on several other inmates when a group of inmates was taking a shower in the prison.
An investigation has been initiated into the incident under the purview of Matara Assistant Prison Superintendent Mangala Welivitiya, who has recorded statements from the relevant prison inmates regarding the incident, yesterday.
Prisons Spokesperson and Prisons Commissioner Gamini B. Dissanayake said that three inmates involved in the clash have been transferred to the Boossa Prison in Galle. He also said that the incident was reported to the Court yesterday. Four inmates who were injured in the incident are receiving treatment under the protection of Prison officers at Ward 58 of the Karapitiya National Hospital. Hospital sources said that their condition is not serious.
Galle Prison sources said that the clash broke out between two groups belonging to powerful gang leaders ‘Ahungalle Loku Patty’ and ‘Karandeniya Sudda’, who are currently being held there. It is reported that there was an argument between these two gangs about five days ago in the prison and after that they again resorted to such a clash on Sunday.
Following the clash, Sri Lanka Police Special Task Force – (STF) officers and Police officers were deployed to strengthen the security at the Galle Prison and it is reported that the activities in the prison are currently being conducted peacefully.
