Former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has been summoned to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to record a statement regarding the death of a police sergeant from the Colombo Crimes Division during a shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama, Matara in 2023.

Police said that the former Minister has been summoned to the CID on Monday (31) for a statement  to be recorded regarding the incident.

Earlier, the Matara Magistrate’s Court ordered the arrest of seven police officers including IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon over a shooting incident that took place in front of the W15 Hotel in the Pelena area in Weligama, Matara, on December 31, 2023.

On that day, a CCD team had travelled to the area to arrest a suspect without informing the area police. Policemen had opened fire at the CCD due to a mistaken identity, and one of the police sergeants, Upul Chaminda Kumara (46) was killed in the incident, while a Sub-Inspector (SI) was injured.

IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon is currently remanded in connection with the incident.

It was reported that the former Minister was summoned for an inquiry due to suspicions that the former Minister is aware of information regarding the incident.
