Court of Appeal orders to release remanded lady lawyer (Update)

The Court of Appeal today (March 31) ordered the release of a female Attorney who had been remanded by the Puttalam High Court on charges of contempt of court on March 28.

The order was made after taking up a petition filed by the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) – Attorney-at-Law Rajeev Amarasuriya.

The remanded lawyer has also ordered to appear the Court of Appeal on April 28.

Lady lawyer remanded over contempt of court

Puttalam High Court Judge – Nadee Aparna Suwandurugoda, has ordered the remand of a female attorney-at-law over contempt of court and to hold her in custody until bail conditions are fulfilled.

The lawyer remanded in this manner is a resident of Arachchikattuwa, Chilaw.

The High Court judge had ordered that two residents of the Puttalam judicial zone must sign the surety bonds of Rs. 2.5 million and that their income records must be verified.

The lawyer faces charges of failing to extend the due respects to the High Court and the judge during a bail application hearing on March 07 as well as when entering an open courtroom on March 28th.

Ex-President pays compensation in Royal Park case (Update)

Former President Maithripala Sirisena has paid the compensation of Rs. 01 million ordered by the Supreme Court in connection with the controversial presidential pardon granted to Jude Shramantha Jayamaha, who was convicted in the Royal Park murder case.


The matter was taken up today (April 29) before a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices S. Thurairajah, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Janak de Silva. Sirisena was also present in court during the proceedings.

President’s Counsel Faizer Musthapha, appearing on behalf of the former President, informed the court that the full compensation amount had been paid as directed.
Following the confirmation of payment, the Supreme Court bench ordered that Maithripala Sirisena be released from further proceedings related to the case.

Maithripala appears before SC

Former President Maithripala Sirisena has appeared before the Supreme Court today (April 29).

He has appeared in court for a hearing related to a Fundamental Rights petition on the pardon and release of the individual convicted and sentenced to death in the Royal Park murder case.

Sirisena’s appearance follows an earlier order issued by the Supreme Court, requiring his presence in connection with the matter.

President to visit Vietnam in May

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is set to begin a three-day official visit to Vietnam starting May 03, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced.

The Cabinet Spokesman also said that several bilateral trade agreements will be signed during the visit.
