Three-Wheeler fares won’t drop despite fuel price cut

Published

on

Following the recent reduction in the price of a litre of 92 Octane petrol, the All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Union (AITWDU) said they are unable to reduce three-wheeler taxi fares at this time, as the decision must be made by the Western Province National Transport Commission and the National Transport Commission (NTC).

AITWDU president Lalith Dharmasekera told the Daily Mirror that the Western Province National Transport Commission had recently decided to regulate three-wheeler taxi fares in the Western Province.

Accordingly, they established new fixed rates for three-wheeler taxis. Earlier, it was decided to set the fare for the first kilometre at Rs. 100 and Rs. 90 for each additional kilometre. However, this was never implemented.

“Therefore, we cannot make any decision to reduce three-wheeler taxi fares, as it is the responsibility of the Western Province National Transport Commission,” Dharmasekera said.
