SJB plans to appoint defeated mayoral candidate to Peliyagoda UC

Published

According to reports, discussions have taken place to appoint Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) defeated mayoral candidate to the Peliyagoda Urban Council.

Although the National People’s Power (NPP) won the council with 08 seats, the opposition collectively holds 09 seats.

Accordingly, the opposition SJB holds 04 seats, the UNP has 02, and the SLPP, Sarvajana Balaya, and Podujana Eksath Peramuna each have 01 seats in the Peliyagoda Urban Council.

Due to the mandatory 25% women’s representation, the SJB must allocate 02 of its bonus member slots to female candidates.

According to internal sources, the SJB is considering a pre-arranged agreement to appoint a female member through the Podujana Eksath Peramuna’s seat to meet the women’s quota, thereby allowing the SJB to use its own bonus seat to bring in the defeated mayoral candidate.

Reports further claim that one of SJB’s senior advisors is behind this political maneuver.
