Three nominations for two Court of Appeal vacancies

Three names have been submitted to President Ranil Wickremesinghe to fill two vacancies in the Court of Appeal.

Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya has nominated the two senior most High Court Judges, Gihan Kulatunga and Damith Thotawatta, to be considered. Attorney General Sanjaya Rajaratnam has nominated senior Deputy Solicitor General Mahen Gopallwa to be considered for the vacancy.

President Wickremesinghe is due to submit two of these names to the Constitutional Council for approval.

Meanwhile, a vacancy is due to come up in the Supreme Court with the retirement of Justice Buweneka Aluvihare.

Yoshitha & Daisy Forrest indicted & bailed

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son – Yoshitha Rajapaksa, and his grandmother – Daisy Forrest have been formally indicted today (July 02) before the Colombo High Court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The indictment was presented before High Court Judge Pradeep Abeyratne, who subsequently ordered both defendants to be released on two surety bonds of Rs. 01 million each.

The judge further ordered to obtain fingerprints of the accused and relevant records be summoned as part of the judicial process.
